Ayurvedic Therapies for Enhancing Quality of Life in CP Children

Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term for the neurological disorders that harm normal body movements and muscle coordination in kids. A major damage to the developing brain of an infant is normally the cause behind CP. CP child treatment in Ayurveda has multiple approaches like Ayurvedic medicines, massages, therapies, etc. to accelerate rehab and alleviate the symptoms.

Understanding CP

During the fetal developmental stage, specific areas of the brain engaged in muscle movements and coordination do not develop fully. This results in cerebral palsy. In rare cases, injuries to the brain, pre- or post-birth, can also cause CP. In the majority of cases, disabilities arising from these injuries are permanent, and no clinical treatment has been proven effective in curing CP. Some of the most common symptoms of CP are:

  • Ataxia, or a lack of muscle coordination
  • Spasticity, a condition pointing toward the presence of stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexive actions in patients
  • Kids with CP often walk on their toes rather than using their entire feet, known as “scissored gait.”
  • Varied muscle tones
  • Children diagnosed with CP exhibit delays in learning various motor movements and achieving developmental milestones.
  • Sensory perception issues, mental retardance

CP child treatment in Ayurveda

As mentioned earlier, the disabilities arising from CP are irreversible; however, the quality of life of the patient can be improved via appropriate treatments. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on improving muscle strength and flexibility, delaying the progression of the disease, and assisting with rehab. Panchakarma is the best treatment for cerebral palsy. It has five steps discussed below.

  • Udwartana: In Udwartana, the muscles of the body are massaged with a powder of certain herbal medications. The entire focus of this treatment is to enhance blood and lymphatic circulation in the body. This treatment has been linked to reducing spasticity in CP patients.
  • Sarvaanga Abhyang: Abhyang improves venous and lymphatic drainage in the body. This treatment also aids in the dilation of the arteriorles. This leads to increased blood circulation in the body. This massage stimulates the Central Nervous System (CNS) as well.
  • Swedan: Swedan has different types, and they all aim to promote sweating to flush out toxins from the body. For treating CP, the body of the patient is exposed to steam originating from the boiling of fluid that contains herbs or liquids like Dhanyamla or milk. The main aim of Swedana is to reduce stiffness and improve mobility in CP patients.
  • Nasyam: In Nasyam, patients are administered a combination of herbal juice, oil, and powders in their noses. This therapy clears the nasal channels by removing Kapha from the body.
  • Basti: In Basti, or medicated enema, medicines are administered in the form of suspension through the rectum or genitourinary tract via a specific piece of equipment called a Basti Yantra. According to Ayurveda, the rectum has a rich supply of blood and lymph. By passing medicinal solutions via this route, the medicine reaches the entire body quickly. Basti helps in improving fine motor skills and also works on improving general skills like sitting, standing, crawling, walking, etc. in CP patients.
