What do you mean by Proteinuria?

Kidneys with good condition flush out the extra waste and fluid from the body, but they allow protein and other vital nutrients to pass through and return to the bloodstream. But in case of unhealthy kidneys which have been damaged to some extent, the kidneys can let some protein escape through their filters, into the urine. And this situation is called proteinuria.

Anybody can notice protein in their urine but those who are suffering from the following diseases are more likely to suffer from proteinuria.

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history or genetic kidney disorders.

How does protein get into urine?

Protein essentially gets into the urine if the kidneys aren’t working as expected by their inherent limit. Usually, glomeruli, which are tiny or small loops of blood vessels present in the kidneys, filter waste products and excess water from blood.

Glomeruli pass these toxins and harmful substances but allow larger proteins and blood cells into the urine. If small proteins sneak through the glomeruli, tubules catch those proteins and keep them in the body.

However, if glomeruli is damaged, the proteins will flow into the urine.

How is Proteinuria diagnosed?

Proteinuria is identified through a urine test. The patient provides a urine sample, which is then tested in a lab. Doctors use an instrument called dipstick, a thin plastic stick with chemicals on the tip of the stick to test part of the sample right away. If too much of any component is in the urine, the chemical tip changes its color.

Protein in Urine Treatment

You may not need remedies or any medicines if proteinuria is mild or lasts only a short time. But it’s very much necessary to cure kidney disorder before it leads to kidney failure.

Your doctor can prescribe medicines, especially in case of diabetes and high blood pressure.
